The Story of Hussain Andaryas
I was
born to an Afghan family on the 23rd of June 1965 (2
of Saratan, 1344). I was raised as a Muslim in the capital
city Kabul. I was home-schooled in the primary levels
and then joined Lais-e-Habibya, a secondary school.
My home-schooling was due to my parents’
frequent trips to India and Japan. In fact, I went to
Habibya just to prevent my joining the Communist Afghan
army. Actually, I wanted to fight against the Russians
along with my other Afghan brothers. I assume that my
father paid a huge bribe to the authorities in order
to keep me from
going into the army.
My father was a businessman, and my
mother was a doctor. From the very beginning of my life
I learned that I belonged to an oppressed ethnic group
which suffered centuries of oppression and hatred. I
felt this in the school where others looked down on
me and mocked me. Growing up in this environment I became
full of hate for others. Even though my teachers did
not openly say anything bad about my people, I understood
from their behavior that they did not like me. I never
failed in school and always came up with the best grades
in my class. This fact added to the hatred some students
and teachers had toward me. Did I meet an Angel from
God?
In the mid-80’s on my way home
from school one day I met a stranger. I was standing
at the bus stop and waiting to go home when I saw a
man from the other side of the road coming towards me.
He was not an Afghan, for sure. He had a bag on his
arm and was in a great hurry. As he approached I was
scared. I thought he might be a Russian. It was the
time when Russian troops invaded Afghanistan and we
saw many Russian soldiers and officers moving around
in the city. When the man reached where I was standing,
he didn’t say anything; instead, he took out a
book written in Persian and then he did a very unusual
thing. He tore a few pages from this book and handed
them to me. I was very surprised when he did this. At
the same time I was very scared. He thought for a moment
and tore a few more pages from the book and gave them
to me saying, "Take these and read them; they are
good for you. I was sure he gave me those pages to convert
me to Communism. He then left me, and I never saw him
again...more
