Good News for Hindus
He has made everything beautiful
in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts
of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from
beginning to end. (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
Missionary and writer Don Richardson
wrote a book entitled Eternity in Their Hearts,
in which he demonstrates how God has, by his grace,
sovereignly placed in every culture some representation
of the good news of Jesus Christ. So when the Apostle
Paul presents the gospel in Athens, he quotes both Epimenides'
Cretia and Cleanthes' Hymn to Zeus, when he says "For
in him we live and move and have our being," and
"We are his offspring."
Similarly, Sankara, who is considered
by many to have been India's greatest philosopher, once
said:
Salvation is eternal and works are
temporal; therefore, salvation cannot come through
works.
This is exactly true, and the point
of contact with the Christian good news. Thus Paul says,
"...no one will be declared righteous in his sight
by obeying the law; rather through the law we become
conscious of sin; But now a righteousness from God,
apart from the law, has been made known, to which the
Law and the Prophets testify." (Romans 3:20-21)
Again, he says "For it is by grace you have been
saved, through faith —and this not from yourselves,
it is the gift of God —not by works, so that no
one can boast" (Ephesians 1:13).
